China sees 460 million border crossings in first eight months of 2025

From January to August 2025, China's border inspection agencies processed a total of 460 million entries and exits, up 14.9 percent year-on-year, the National Immigration Administration (NIA) announced on Thursday at the Global Public Security Cooperation Forum held in Lianyungang, east China's Jiangsu Province.

Of the total, 220 million were mainland residents, a 15.4 percent increase; 180 million were residents from China's Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions and the Taiwan region, up 11.2 percent; and 51.27 million were foreign nationals, marking a 27.8 percent rise compared with the same period last year. Among the foreign visitors, 15.89 million entered visa-free, accounting for 62.1 percent of all foreign entries – a surge of 52.1 percent year-on-year.

Border inspections of 24.48 million transportation vehicles were also carried out, up 16.2 percent from last year. This included 662,000 flights (+17.1 percent), 71,000 train trips (+4.9 percent), 294,000 ship voyages (+3.8 percent), and 23.45 million motor vehicles (+16.4 percent).

The NIA noted that with China's continued expansion of openness, more Chinese citizens are traveling abroad, while more foreigners are coming to China for business, tourism, work, study, and living. As a result, the number of border crossings at the country’s ports have steadily grown.

Looking ahead, the NIA will focus on steadily expanding institutional openness in immigration management, improving policies and services to support major national and regional strategies, facilitate international exchanges and trade, and optimize border clearance procedures to make travel and cooperation between Chinese and foreign nationals more convenient.
